NewsDr. Jesse Bemley Named Recipient of the Geraldine P. Woods Science AwardIn Washington DC only 9 percent of of the school population has a success rate that will allow them to achieve a college career (it was stated at the Delta Sigma Theta , 2008 Awards Program.) Dr. Jesse Bemley is a leader in the Washington DC Area science and engineering community who has used his vast knowledge, skills and personal contacts to improve the lives of youth in Washington DC. As the president and founder of the nonprofit community based K-12 program, Joint Education Facilities, Inc. ( JEF) Dr. Bemley has assissted more than 400 students in pursing undergraduate and graduate degrees in engineering, math, computer science, and advanced mathematics. He uses various learning techniques, such as mentoring, formal computer and science classes, hands on training, communication development, and research and investigative methodologies to prepare African American youth to conduct independent research, publish and present their own scientific research papers at local, national and international conferences, such as the District of Columbia Computer Sciene Conference, the National Technical Association Conference, the World Conference on Expert Systems, the Teragrid Conference, and the Supercomputing Conference. Several of Dr. Bemley's students have competed and won awards in national computer and science competitions, such as the NAACP, AfroAmerican Academic, Culture, Technology and Scientific Olympics. A group of students will soon be on their way to compete in the Teragrid competitions this year . Through his mentoring, Dr. Bemley has contributed significantly to the increase of African American scientists, engineers and technologists in the Washington, DC. community. Many of these students are prominent scientists now mentor and serve as role modles for the next generation of DC students who want to purse advanced science careers. In addtion to numerous accolates for his own scientific work, including serving as a Reviewer for the Scoeity for Information Management quarterly and for the National Science Foundation, Dr. Bemley and his students have been acknowledged in numerous national professional conference proceedings and journals, Black Enterprise Magazine, the Washington Post , radion and other media for his significant contribution and majore impact on the lives of African American scientists. Dr. Bemley grew up in Memphis, Tennessee. He received a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics from Mississippi Valley State University, a Master of Science in Computer Science from American University, and a Ph.D in Public Administration from Pacific Western University. He has received numerous awards for his work including" Achiever of the Year", from the National Technical Association; Black Engineer of the Year for Community Service" by the US Black Engineer and Information Technology Association, and induction into the DC " Hall of Fame" in the areas of Science and Technology. He lives in Southeast Washington DC , with his wife , Shiree. They have three college age children. |
